This is the draft text of the main messages for this Section, developed from the comments made in the first round of consultation.

Please EITHER: copy and paste this text into the message box below, and edit it to an improved version of the statements you think this section should be making, OR: draft your own statements. What are the trends we predict for future research in TEL?

What is the agenda we wis
h to promote?

We want to emphasise the distinction between ICT and technology.

Traditionally, one uses the term "ICT" as if it contained all uses of computers and modern technological media. However, it does the opposite: it groups all technologies and strips them of their powerful abilities to analize, to support reasoning. While this can be said to be "analyse information" and similar phrasings, that's not how the concept of "ICT" is commonly used and understood. Typically, the "I" in "ICT" is seen as "getting information" or "presenting information", and the "C" means communicating via email, or online conferencing.

Using the term 'Technology' instead of 'ICT' allows us to renew our interpretation of the contributions it makes. Technology enables us to learn in powerful ways, which feed on information but go beyond it. When you build a model spreadsheet of how a bar works (listing probable cash-flows, opening hours, expected product sales, required number of workers and working hours, etc.), you are learning a lot about the operation and features of a bar. Information technology is not just about the information we see presented on web pages; it concerns also the ways we can represent so many of our actions, perceptions and experiences in terms of information that a computer can interpret and use. Once that happens, the technology begins to mediate our thinking, taking it further than it might otherwise go. Similarly, communications mediated through technology become enhanced in ways that are not possible when they are purely sound or print-based. The technology can capture our fleeting discussions, for example, or invite us to address wider or narrower audiences, or structure our debates.
